Jeremy Corbyn called on referees to halt games and take footballers off pitches if they’re racially abused during this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The Labour leader and Arsenal fan declared the action would send a zero tolerance message around the globe.

“If a player is getting racist abuse during the match then I think it’s absolutely right the referee stops the match and, unless the racist abuse ceases or the perpetrators are taken out of the stadium, the referee should take them off the pitch,” he said.

“The World Cup is the greatest show on earth. It’s going to have a TV audience of billions...we must not tolerate racism, xenophobia, homophobia and anti-Semitism. We need to send out that message.”

Corbyn spoke out during a Show Racism the Red Card education session with school children in his local club’s Emirates Stadium.

Fifa and Uefa were accused by Ghanaian midfielder Sulley Muntari, who used to play for Sunderland and Portsmouth, of not taking racism seriously after he received a second yellow card in Italy for leaving the pitch in protest at abuse during a Serie A game.

Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster, an England Under-17 World Cup winner, also recently complained the sport’s authorities were failing to stamp out prejudice after detailing abuse.
